1. Who Sends the Messages
Clienty is case-management software for law firms. Each firm that uses Clienty texts its own clients from its own toll-free number. The messages come from the law firm, not from Clienty: the firm's name appears at the start of every text, for example “Smith Law via Clienty: …”. Clienty is the software provider that delivers the messages on the firm's behalf.
Only people who are clients of the firm, and who have given the firm consent as described below, receive these texts.
2. What Clients Receive
Texts relate to the client's own legal matter with the firm and are limited to:
- Appointment and court date reminders: Reminders of upcoming meetings with the firm and scheduled court dates.
- Payment reminders and invoices: Notices that a payment is due and links to invoices for the client's own matter.
- Requests for documents: Requests that the client provide documents the firm needs for their matter.
- Intake forms: Links to intake forms the firm needs the client to complete.
- Replies to the client's questions: Responses from firm staff when the client texts the firm a question.
Firms do not send marketing or promotional texts through Clienty. Message frequency varies with the client's matter. Message and data rates may apply.
3. How Clients Opt In
Consent is collected by the law firm, directly from its client, during intake. The firm asks the client in one of these ways:
- Verbally: Firm staff ask the client during the intake conversation.
- In writing: In the firm's engagement letter or intake paperwork.
- Online: On the firm's own web form.
Firm staff then record the client's consent in Clienty by checking “Client consents to receive SMS communications” on the client's profile. Clienty's texting screen only lists clients whose consent is recorded, and anyone who replies STOP is blocked from every text the firm sends through Clienty.
4. Example Consent Language
Below is example consent language a firm can use with its clients, on paper, on a web form or read aloud. Each firm uses its own name and wording; this example shows what the client is agreeing to.
Consent to receive texts is not required to hire the firm or to receive its services.
5. What a Text Looks Like
Every text starts with the firm's name. The first text in a conversation ends with “Reply STOP to opt out.”
6. Opting Out & Getting Help
Clients can reply to any text from the firm with one of these keywords:
- STOP: Stops all texts from the firm's number. STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END and QUIT do the same.
- START: Resubscribes after opting out (YES or UNSTOP also work).
- HELP: Returns help information.
Opt-outs are honored immediately and recorded. Once a client opts out, the firm can't text that number from Clienty unless the client replies START (or YES or UNSTOP).
7. Privacy of Numbers & Consent
Mobile numbers and SMS consent are not shared with third parties for marketing purposes. For more on how Clienty handles personal information, see the SMS section of our Privacy Policy.
